Pattern Approval
Metrological approval of meters and weighing instruments.
What it is
Measuring instruments used in commercial transactions must have their model approved by INMETRO, ensuring they measure correctly.
Who it is for
Domestic manufacturers and importers of water meters and non-automatic weighing instruments.
What we do
- We analyze the model against the ordinance’s metrological requirements
- We prepare the technical documentation and coordinate the tests
- We follow the process until the approval is published
Scope covered
| Product family | INMETRO Ordinance |
|---|---|
| Meters for cold and hot drinking water consumption | 155/2022 |
| Non-automatic weighing instruments | 157/2022 |
How the process works
Click each step to see who is involved and what happens.
Classification
We identify the applicable metrological ordinance and the model requirements.
Documentation
We prepare, together with the client, the descriptive report, drawings and technical specifications of the instrument.
Request
We file the pattern approval request with INMETRO and organize the shipment of the prototype.
Tests
The prototype undergoes metrological evaluation and tests.
Approval
INMETRO publishes the pattern approval.
Initial verification
Each manufactured or imported unit undergoes initial verification before being used or sold, confirming that it is identical to the approved model.
Import consent
For imported products: ask your customs broker to request the appropriate import consent (anuência) from INMETRO. This step is carried out by the broker, not by Moderacon, but it is essential to clear the product for import.
Frequently asked questions
What is pattern approval?
It is INMETRO’s assessment confirming that a measuring instrument model measures correctly. Without it, the instrument cannot be used in commercial transactions.
Do commercial scales require pattern approval?
Yes. Non-automatic weighing instruments follow Ordinance 157/2022.
Does pattern approval replace the verification of each instrument?
No. Pattern approval applies to the model. Each unit undergoes initial verification, a mandatory procedure before the instrument is put into use or sold. It confirms that each manufactured or imported unit is identical to the approved prototype and measures correctly.
